On Mea Culpa day, just as Alex Rance was publicly scolding himself for whacking Jack Watts, Tom Bugg asked his club if he, too, could apologise for his own actions in that game.

The prickly 23-year old former Giant, who appears to relish a role as a provocateur, confronted Jack Riewoldt as he hobbled from the ground with an ankle injury in the last quarter.

The Match Review Panel fined Bugg $1000 for making contact with an injured player. Bugg winced at his behaviour when he saw footage of it after the game.

"When I watch it back now, I'm definitely remorseful. It actually makes me cringe when I watch the footage. At the time I didn't really think of the consequences and what would come from it," he said.

"It (the MRP sanction) was probably a valid punishment. It's totally against the rules and going forward it should be treated exactly the same way.

"You shouldn't be allowed to make contact with an injured player because the main priority is trying to prevent injuries in our game. That was a bit of character and passion coming out in my game."

Bugg has also raised the ire of football commentators and opposition fans for grandstanding in the game by celebrating before he had kicked the goal, saluting the crowd as he ran into an open goal. He then put his finger to his lips to silence the Richmond fans with a wink.

Bugg admitted the decision to confront Riewoldt as he left the ground meant he had drawn focus on himself and made it all about him, which was something he was uncomfortable with.

"Now looking back on it, it seems like I was putting the focus on myself and that doesn't really sit too well with me," he said. "Where the team's gone this year, we've been really team-orientated in our focus and that's what has got us our three wins so far and that's what's put us in a good place for the year to come.

"We're really building a sustainable and successful team. As long as we're cracking in at the contest and doing that type of thing a lot of players are going to flourish from that."

Bugg was not the only Melbourne player, though, to confront Riewoldt during an at-times spiteful match. After the game, Melbourne captain Nathan Jones shook the full-forward's hand but the pair then clearly exchanged heated words.

A melee at quarter-time of Sunday night's match led to 11 players being fined a total of $12,500.
