Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence Shannon Fentiman and chair of the Domestic and Family Violence Implementation Council Dame Quentin Bryce announced Friday Mount Isa would be the site of a three-year integrated service response trial to work out the best way to respond to a crisis of domestic violence and abuse.
“This is about getting everyone who plays a key role in keeping victims safe and holding perpetrators to account to work in a collaborative and co-ordinated way,” Ms Fentiman said.
“It’s about getting our police, our hospitals, our dedicated support staff, our corrections staff all working together to share information and intervene before harm occurs.”
Ms Fentiman said local service providers and agencies would develop an integrated response model to domestic violence as a “one stop shop” for support services.
Domestic and Family Violence Implementation Council Chair Dame Quentin Bryce, in Mount Isa for two days visiting local organisations and domestic and family violence services, called it a “common sense” approach. “I have had some extremely valuable discussions with local organisations, services and individuals and we have spoken about ways we can work together to better respond to victims of domestic and family violence,” she said.
The Mount Isa integrated service response trial is one of three across Queensland recommended by Dame Quentin Special Domestic and Family Violence Taskforce’s Not Now, Not Ever report as part of a long-term focus on providing the best possible support for Queenslanders impacted by domestic and family violence.
There will be an urban trial site in the Logan/Beenleigh region, while the government will work with Indigenous communities to work out the third site.
