Two big hits featured early in the first half, before an all in brawl ensued that resulted in Wakefield hooker Scott Moore and Widnes scrum-half Aaron Heremaia being sent off.
Vikings centre Patrick Ah Van lined up Wakefield's Ashley Gibson with the brutal tackle, which left Gibson being helped from the field in a daze.
Ah Van was sin-binned, much to the chagrin of the Vikings who remonstrated with the referee that the tackle was legal.
Ah Van was immediately felled with a vicious response when he returned to the field, sparking the brawl between both teams.
Wakefield won the spiteful affair 18-16, which ended with three players sin binned and the two sent off.
