Nathan Buckley has admitted he needs to "be better" after a post-match incident with a crowd member at Domain Stadium on Sunday.

Buckley was making his way down from the coaches box after the 62-point loss to West Coast, when an Eagles fan made an inflammatory comment directed at him.

While Buckley did not retaliate verbally or physically, he nevertheless conceded he should have shown greater restraint, having repeatedly turned his head to stare at the fan.

"I've got to be better than that. One look might have been alright," Buckley told Fox Footy on Monday night.

"He wouldn't make eye contact.

"The reason I kept looking back is because the bloke wouldn't look at me.

"So I was just waiting to see whether at some stage he had the gumption to look me in the eye."

Buckley also said he would contact Richmond coach Damien Hardwick this week.

Like Buckley, Hardwick has faced intense scrutiny this year, with the Tigers languishing at 1-5 after three consecutive finals failures.

Buckley said he felt for his Richmond counterpart.

"I think we've got a little bit of empathy for each other. I anticipate he would be wearing the weight of the world on his shoulders."
