In the event’s second year, the track has been extended a further 20-kilometres to cater for more serious riders. The 84-kilometre course starts at the halfway point between Mount Isa and Cloncurry, with the circuit around the Fountain Springs area.
Fountain Springs Classic coordinator, Adrian Cameron, alongside Gary and Wendy Baker, have been working tirelessly during the last few weeks preparing and marking out the trails.
“We wanted a track suitable to all levels of riders there was the request by a few to maybe ‘toughen up the course’ for the experienced cyclists,” Mr Cameron said.
“There will be shorter option for social riders, teams are also encouraged for those who don’t want to do the full distances.”
The ride includes all kinds of terrain and starts at 9am and there will also be a junior event so riders younger then 15 years, can also get involved.
“While this is a race for the hard core mountain bikers in really rugged terrain, we really want to encourage families and social riders to participate, hence the options of shorter riders and junior events,” he said.
All proceeds from the classic will go to Mount Isa animal rescue group Paws, Hoofs and Claws (PHC).
PHC president, Sue Carson, along with helpers, will be catering for the event which will host a lunch and barbecue on Sunday.
On the Saturday beforehand, Mount Isa’s The Music Shack members will take the stage for the evening’s entertainment.
“Everyone is welcome to the shack night and camping is available at the Weir. Attending the shack night is strongly encouraged as it is a unique event in a beautiful bush setting, featuring the incomparable musician and comedian John Cullen.
Nominations will open at the start of May and can be processed online or by filling out a form from Power and Air Solutions on the Barkly Highway. For more information and updates on the event follow the Fountain Springs MTB Classic Facebook page or call Adrian Cameron on 0419 663 342.
