Lions powerbrokers are expected to call for counsel with whistleblowers in a desperate bid to get to the bottom of an alarming discrepancy in their free kicks less than two months into this season.

Despite remaining unbeaten in their flag defence, the Lions have the biggest free-kick differential in the league after receiving only 83 in their favour and being penalised a hefty 135 times across just six games so far.

Unsociable habits around contests appear to also be spreading to the WAFL's alignment clubs East Perth and Peel Thunder if free-kicks are taken into calculations.

The Royals as West Coast Eagles alignment team have a free-kick differential in the red at minus-27 with 107 going their way to 134 against them, while Fremantle's WAFL partner has a been awarded just 77 frees and given away 103.

Peel has had the least free kicks of all WAFL outfits so far this season.

It has prompted fears of a conspiracy against the perceived power outfits of the league.

Last season's beaten grand finalists West Perth appear most favourable with umpires so far this season with a positive differential of 51 from 161 frees in their favour to only 110 indiscretions.

Traditional rivals East and West Perth have played seven games so far into this season and are the two sides yet to have a bye.

Lions fury with the umps came to a head last Saturday when fed-up Subiaco faithful stringently plotted their free-kick tally in an anticipated top-of-the-table clash with flag hopefuls South Fremantle at Fremantle Oval.

Lions officials are likely to ask WA Football Commission authorities to examine replays of the clash to confirm that the reigning champions went 80 minutes without receiving a free-kick at all.

The official WAFL statistics register South with 28 frees to Subi's 10 for a clash the Lions won by 31 points to remain unbeaten and strengthening mounting prospects of taking a historic third straight premiership and sixth flag in the last decade.

The Lions were awarded five frees in the opening term to the home side's six with allegations that the reigning champions then going until time-on into the final quarter before another favourable umpire's call.

Subi were handed five frees in the final 10 minutes of the game and another four points firmly in their grasp.

A damning objective statistical calculation has been prepared by Lions historian Ted Wishart to accompany a submission for "please explain" to WAFC governors and umpiring advisors of the local competition.

"I've been watching Subi for 70 years and I've never seen anything like going for two complete quarters and 80 minutes and not get one free kick," he said.

"By my count, the free-kick count was 26 to five at the 20-minute mark of the last quarter and it was only just junk-time with Subi getting their last frees and well in front.

"Imagine if this was happening in the AFL to any one team?

"There'd be an outrage, but it would be more heavily scrutinised through media coverage of the game."

The devoted Lions fanatic recalled the only other occasion when the Lions had a similar free-kick score line was at the height of a successful premiership era in 2006 under highly regarded coach Peter German.

Subi was on the wrong side of the whistle that day according to Wishart with only five frees to 25 in a home win over West Perth.

"On that day though, they didn't go through two full quarters and 80 minutes without even a free-kick," he recalled.

Subiaco chief executive Peter Capes confirmed a request for clarification with local umpiring officials had been lodged with the football commission.

"I can say that we have asked the commission to review footage of our game against South Fremantle," he said.

"It's a clarification of a few things relating to some decisions that we will want explained."
