Mount Isa midwifery unit manager, Kerry Owens, said the maternity staff decorated the corridor in purple and celebrated with an afternoon tea.
“Each year 29 Mount Isa midwives deliver between 550 to 600 babies. Today is about celebrating our career and bringing birth into the world,” Ms Owens said.
Queensland Nurses’ Union (QNU) secretary, Beth Mohle, said International Day of the Midwife would highlight the importance of midwives throughout Queensland, Australia and the world.
Ms Mohle said midwives continued to work hard to secure the best outcomes for women and newborns. She said safe patient numbers and workloads were essential to keeping mothers and babies safe.
“Midwives play an integral role in our society. The contributions of midwives should not only be respected but celebrated,’’ Ms Mohle said.
