State MP Robbie Katter said he was delighted the Queensland government had given the iconic Mount Isa event such a boost.
"Since it began in 1959, the Mount Isa Rodeo has gone from strength to strength," Mr Katter said.
"It's now the largest rodeo in the southern hemisphere and a must see for people from around Australia and the world. Last year we saw more than 25,000 visitors, which more than doubled the size of the town.”
This new status means greater funding support from the state government.
Mr Katter said this funding would help the rodeo grow which means more tourism dollars for local businesses and more local jobs.
"This is acknowledgement of hard work of all the volunteers who have made this event grow year-on-year," he said. "I thank the Combined Rotary Clubs of Mount Isa for their continuing commitment to our community."
Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo Manager Natalie Flecker said major events status would help with the goal of making the event one of the best in the world.
"Mount Isa is very proud to be Australia's rodeo capital and this valuable support will help us take the rodeo to the next level,” Ms Flecker said. “We are very grateful for the Government's support and belief in this event.
"This news could not have come at a better time. We have a new board and a strong team focussed on strengthening the visitor experience and planning for continued growth.
"If you haven't been to the Isa Rodeo, we are ready to give you a very genuine Outback Queensland welcome and an experience you truly will never forget."
The Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo is a not-for-profit event as a project of the Combined Rotary Clubs of Mount Isa and delivered by more than 600 volunteers.
The 2016 Mount Isa Rodeo runs from 12 to 14 August 2016.
Three days of world-class rodeo action is complemented by a rodeo festival including a free street party, outdoor concerts, mardi gras parade, Mailmans Express horse race, Fred Brophy's Outback Boxing Troupe and more.
