Former Richmond football boss Craig Cameron will oversee a beefed up list management and recruiting team at Greater Western Sydney with assistant coach Luke Power expected to move into a new off-field role from next season.

The restructured Giants football department under new boss Wayne Campbell is also looking at bolstering the club's development resources in the contentious academy areas across Albury, Wagga and the Riverina.

Cameron, who quit the Tigers at the start of 2013 in an ill-fated move to run Bill Vlahos' BC3 Thoroughbreds, will replace Graeme Allan in a move forecast by Fairfax Media last week.

Allan, who in turn took over the role when Stephen Silvagni departed at the end of 2014 to return to Carlton, has returned to Collingwood in a move which initially disappointed the Giants.

However Allan has insisted he will be working outside the Magpies' football operation to run the club's yet-to-be-formed women's football and netball teams.

Allan was overseeing both the football and list management roles at the under-resourced GWS which has come under some pressure from the AFL to bolster its football department and specifically list management and recruiting.

Cameron, who has been working with former Richmond president Gary March at his sportswear company, will be based in Melbourne.

Power, the three-time Brisbane Lions premiership player who co-captained the Giants in their first season, has indicated a desire to return to Melbourne at the end of the year. He is expected to step out of coaching and into a list management and football role assisting Cameron.

The Giants' opposition analyst Adrian Caruso is also expected to take on wider responsibilities under the changes.

Greater Western Sydney have been forced to defend their academy with opposition clubs accusing the fledgling Giants of earmarking elite talent from traditional football regions in southern New South Wales without actually placing development resources into that talent.

The AFL's football boss Mark Evans did not rule out further changes regarding the GWS academy before the end of the season as Collingwood president Eddie McGuire has led the charge against the new club and its list concessions and generous academy zone.

Hawthorn has also been a staunch critic of the academy points system afforded the four northern clubs.
