While the Gold Coast Suns have expressed strong interest in joining Port Adelaide in China next season, a Victorian club could yet make the trip.

Power chief executive Keith Thomas said a final call had yet to be made.

"It's still to be resolved. That will be the AFL's decision. We haven't ruled anyone in or out. The Gold Coast have been vocal but there have been Melbourne clubs who have expressed interest," he said.

The Power last month revealed they would play the first game for premiership points in Shanghai next year as part of a multi-million dollar sponsorship deal with a Chinese property developer.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull attended a press conference in Shanghai alongside AFL chief Gillon McLachlan and Thomas, where a memorandum of understanding was signed for matches in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

The Power, however, have refused to be the home side, meaning a Victorian club would have to cede a home game in favour of the historic northern hemisphere clash to be possibly held in the bye round.

Collingwood and Melbourne have been mentioned as possible opponents once more information was put forward. Greater Western Sydney could be another partner.

Thomas said the rival club would be financially compensated as if it was playing the Power in Melbourne, and would retain the benefits of being a home club – although this would be diluted being in a foreign market.

"It's largely to do with the stadium deals with what they have got and potentially what they could lose. They will get compensated for it – that's a guarantee – it's just whether how much they lose [elsewhere] ... for clubs that have got multiple games at Etihad or the MCG, they could [be interested]," he said.

"They would definitely not lose anything. It's an issue for the fans. They will lose a membership game and we understand that and we are very sensitive to that but clubs have been doing that and, again, because we are an interstate club, we are not a big drawing club over here, so I think there would be some clubs who can say, maybe we can afford to do it somewhere else.

"That's what they have got to go through."

Shanghai tycoon Gui Guo Jie's has agreed to tip in $1 million-a-season over three years to stage the match.

The Power will hold a training camp in Shanghai in the first week of December to help players adjust to local conditions and also to stimulate interest in the match. As part of this, the club will bus local children to a "come and try AFL carnival".

The Power see great synergy with China, having already broadcast matches into China this season through the country's China Central TV network.
