Independent Cook MP Billy Gordon said he had been in touch with Aurukun community leaders, police, the Queensland Teachers Union and the government over the situation in Aurukun on Tuesday, which ended with 25 teachers temporarily relocated to Cairns and the community's school closed following a weekend of unrest.

But Mr Gordon said the unrest was not due to "a family feudal issue" - which had led to issues in the past - but was the result of "an influx of sly grog into the community", which affected two young men.

The pair allegedly tried to gain access to the home of two female teachers, assaulted the principal who came to their aid and stole his car.

What follows is Mr Gordon's recounting of what he had learned about Tuesday's events:

"From what I understand sometime over the weekend there has been an influx of sly grog into the community which has contributed to some unrest and particularly two individuals, young men, who have tried to gain access to teacher accommodation in the community - there were two female teachers in this particular accommodation pod.

"There were calls put into the Queensland Police Service, the calls were diverted, I understand, to Weipa police, and Weipa police contacted Aurukun police who were out on the road apparently conducting some sort of operation.

"As a result of Aurukun police not being able to respond to the immediate issue in the community, they have contacted the principal and made him aware of the situation.

"The principal has then travelled down from his residence in a Queensland Education vehicle to investigate, where I believe he has been confronted by one of the two men with an axe and threatened.

"There has been unconfirmed reports that the principal has been assaulted, that is yet to be confirmed, I am hearing conflicting stories about that. Hopefully [Wednesday] I will have a better understanding of what has transpired in that particular incident.

"We understand, from that, the Education Queensland vehicle has been car jacked and the two young men have gone on a merry ride around the community.

"Noel Pearson has obviously evacuated his staff and has applauded the minister's actions by basically getting her staff out of the community.

"I am meeting on Monday, possibly Tuesday, next week with some of those staff members who have been taken out of the community to hear personally their concerns and their issues. I have committed to meeting with Kate Jones, the local community and other stakeholders to try and resolve the issue.

"I understand this is not a family feudal issue which is something that has plagued the community, that this is just an incident where there has been an influx of sly grog into the community.

"I understand from my conversations with Dereck Walpo, the Mayor of Aurukun, that sometime on Friday morning, there is a community meeting which has been called.

"I would like to see if there is the possibility of the minister and myself travelling to the community to attend that meeting, now time is probably really tight considering it is a sitting week, and depending on what time that meeting is going to happen will determine whether I can make it. I call on the government to make available their resources to get the minister into the community.

"I have spoken to teachers, the Mayor of Aurukun and he has commended and Noel Pearson, Noel has commended Kate's swift action to remove the teachers, our teachers.

"First and foremost their safety and wellbeing is at the front and centre of our thinking of how we approach this issue.

"The other issue that I am concerned about is whilst there is no teachers in the community there can be no school operating and to provide support services or as some have termed it, diversionary services, or recreational services, activities in the community.

"I have talked to Clare O'Connor, the Director-General of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs [Tuesday] about what type of activities and programs can be put in place whilst the school is closed. She assured me that there are some programs and activities which are being planned by the PCMC in the community.

"It is important that the fact that we are not having kids in the school does not exasperate the current situation. So there is work and some thought being put into exactly what sort of recreational and diversionary activities that are put in place so we can keep young people occupied.

"I've stressed today that it is not just about recreational activities, or diversionary activities, it is about educational activities as well.

"I've talked about Queensland Health playing a role and filling that void that is there right now because the school is going to be closed down, in terms of health education and programs.

"Just being able to fill that void of the school not being open presents the community, because I think that is very important.

"... I've heard from the Queensland Teachers Union that their members have relayed to them that there was a long time between the time that police responded to them, that they were pre-occupied with other matters in the community. Which is understandable.

"When there is an influx of sly grog in the community, that opens up a can of worms.

"Tonight, I spoke to Kate Jones, and she asked the ultimate question - how do we resolve, how do we fix the Aurukun issue.

"And I go back to a conversation I had with the premier around this particular issue and she posed to me 'what do we do about Aurukun' and I think the bigger picture issue is we need to start developing that mineral resource that Aurukun bauxite deposit there, because on the back of real jobs and economic development opportunities that we start addressing the psychology of the community.

"Until we start to give the people of Aurukun a greater sense of purpose, or some hope, on the back of economic development and jobs, it is like trying to build a house from the roof down when it comes to dealing with some of these issues.

"Changing people's reality through giving people a real job is going to be essential, it is a central building block for us to deal with the layers of social dysfunction in a community like Aurukun.

"The dysfunction that people face there, the hopelessness that people face, is, quite debilitating when it comes to lifting themselves out of this quagmire that is the social dysfunction.

"I think that people do really want to see that community thrive there, they do want to see the community turn a corner, and move on from is afflicting in terms of the social dysfunction. It is an ongoing evolution and I don't think we have seen any real solutions across successive governments when it comes to Aurukun.

"It is, I think unprecedented to have the teaching staff vote unanimously for this type of action, to be removed from harm's way.  And I think this breaks a new ground for Aurukun before people hung tough.

"But you know, the big concern for me is that they have an indigenous principal there, who has been threatened, there have been reports he has been assaulted ... and I think teachers are signalling, particularly non-indigenous teachers, in the community, I think, 'if they can assault or threaten one of their own, then it is quite dire'.

"Speaking to the Queensland Teachers Union, they are quite concerned for their members up there and quite startled by the unanimous decision by their members there to want to be moved out of the community in the short term.

"There will be some teachers who will not want to go back, which is a tragedy.

"But it feeds into the bigger picture which is the challenge of Aurukun."

Indigenous leader Mr Pearson, the school's founder, said "intermediate term solutions" were needed to protect school staff in the far north Queensland community.

"I urge the leaders and families of Aurukun to step up and help tackle the problems that are driving these incidents," he said.

Mr Pearson said he endorsed the Education Department's decision to close the school for a week.

"The security of staff is of paramount importance and these incidents are very concerning, and the situation must be fully assessed in terms of the safety and wellbeing of these hardworking people," he said.

Three teenage boys have been charged after they allegedly tried to break into the home of two teachers on Sunday morning.

Public Works and Housing staff were sent to the western Cape York town on Tuesday to review security of the teachers' accommodation and further community engagement measures were being planned.  An additional five police officers were sent to the community to deal with the unrest.  The government was expected to give a broader response on Wednesday.
