Trainer Bob Burow said his horse I’m Desperate Too kicked a metal pole in Noakes Avenue during the fireworks that celebrated the culmination of the Saint Kieran’s Mother’s Day Fete.
A spokesperson for St Kieran’s Catholic Primary School said all necessary permits had been secured for the fireworks and local residents had been advised in the promotion of the event.
Mr Burow said the vet advised that the Pedal bone – in the heel – might have been broken.
“We will find out more properly when we take him off the pain killers,” Mr Burow said.
“If there’s damage to the Pedal bone he has to be retired. Possibly put down.”
Mr Burow said he was unsure if fireworks were suited to a community that had as many dogs, cats and horses as it did.
“I’m not an advocate for banning them completely but I just think there should be a bit more thought of where and when they are let off.”
“I choose animal welfare over fireworks any day of the week.”
He said he was not notified of the fireworks in the newspaper or from his mailbox – but if aware he would have been able to prepare his horse for the noise.
Horse trainer Denise Ballard said that she received no notice for the fireworks.
“It is extremely frustrating, normally we can prepare and sedate the horse.”
Mrs Ballard’s horses were not injured as a result of this year’s fireworks.
“Mine were fine. We had five people when it started. We got people to help.”
However, she learned of the event through Facebook the night of the event which meant it was too late to use a vet.
Mrs Ballard said a horse had been injured from fireworks years ago.
“Even rodeo does not seem to be as loud as this one (the fete), don’t ask me why.
“Last year’s rodeo was not as loud as this one,” Mrs Ballard said.
