There was no light at the south end of the ground, but plenty of luck shone on St George Illawarra Dragons in a remarkable golden-point win over Canberra Raiders.

A match that at one point looked like it would be postponed ended in dramatic fashion, with Euan Aitken emerging as the hero for the Dragons, seizing on a horrendous Jack Wighton blunder.

The Country Origin centre scored an intercept try after the half-time siren in golden point to clinch the 16-12 win at Kogarah, barely seconds after a Canberra field goal attempt came crashing off the upright with a sense of luck Dragons captain Gareth Widdop could barely believe.

"Time was up, I thought we were just going to run it out," Widdop said. "Luckily Euan was on the spot at the right time. He took ten goes to catch it, but he caught it."

There were fears the game would not go ahead after a power outage at a nearby substation caused a partial blackout at the stadium. With the south-western light tower and venue lighting out, players were barely visible in one corner.

However, perhaps to the frustration of those wanting to watch a quality game of league, the referees decided to proceed with kick-off.

It cast a shadow over one end of the ground and doubts over the standard of play - concerns legitimised by the missed tackle count of 90.

However, that cover of darkness lead to Canberra's first raid. The Dragons defence was statue-like as they watched Joseph Leilua breach their line. However, he too must have been short-sighted, losing grasp of the ball under little pressure as he crossed over. The inhabitants of the bunker were frantically fiddling with their TV settings but with little to view, went with the on-field decision rule of no-try.

There was no such controversy though when the Dragons crossed at the visible end of the ground. Tyson Frizell crashed over next to the upright giving Widdop an easy conversion to make it 6-0.

A frustrating first 40 minutes for Canberra was summed up when Blake Austin sustained a bloody face after by a high shot from Joel Thompson. Blood streamed down the nose of the Raiders five-eighth when Thompson struck from over his shoulder, but the referee waved play-on.

A penalty in the 50th minute gave Widdop a chance to extend the hosts' lead by another two points, a gap that based on the Raiders fortunes earlier, looked insurmountable.

However, Canberra's best attacking move of the match finally broke the Dragons defence with 25 minutes to play. A quick passing move created an overlap for Jordan Rapana to score in the corner for his eighth try in four games. When Jarrod Croker converted from the sideline, it was suddenly game on.

However shortly after, the Dragons hit back. Jason Nightingale was on his way into touch when he pulled off a moment of magic to extend the Dragons' grip on the match. With two tacklers holding him, Nightingale made a flick pass to find Tim Lafai to score.

Just as a defeat loomed, Croker levelled the scores to become Canberra's all-time leading point scorer. In support of an Edrick Lee break, Croker scored beneath the posts to break David Furner's points record before scoring the equalising goal with two minutes to play.

Their comeback looked to have been sealed when Aidan Sezer unleashed a field goal attempt only to see the ball strike the upright - and the Raiders were made to rue that further when Wighton gifted Aitken a chance to seal the win. Deep in his own half, the Raiders fullback bizarrely passed towards Aitken, who raced away to send the home fans into a frenzy in the dark.

"We beat ourselves again," Raiders coach Ricky Stuart said. "The amount of games we lose just by beating ourselves is just very, very frustrating."
