The funds were being raised by Fijian-born Florence Tofinga who is a practice manager at Mount Isa Headspace.
Ms Tofinga’s family was directly affected by Cyclone Winston which devastated the Fijian island group in February with the village where her sister’s in-laws live suffering substantial damage with 17 homes destroyed.
“I told her I would raise money for materials for the buildings,” Florence said.
“Because we started the coffee corner at Headspace every Friday I asked the centre manager could I sell cupcakes there and so that’s what I’ve been doing since March.”
Florence said the money is collected in a tin which is left on the front desk for people to donate as they enter the office but this morning as she went to set up for coffee club, the tin was missing from the front desk.
“Oh, where’s the tin, I said, there’s normally two tins there, the other tin for the other fundraiser we do was there but the Fiji fundraiser one was gone.”
With almost a thousand dollars raised so far Florence was thinking about sending the funds back to Fiji at the end of May, but now she is back at square one.
“We have no idea who took it or when, we last looked for the tin last Friday, please return it back to Headspace” she said.
“Maybe those who took it need it more than we do.”
The tin was clearly marked as being for Fijian cyclone relief with a Fijian flag (which contains a union jack) on the cover.
If anyone has any information, please ring Florence at the Headspace office 4437 1301.
Florence said she would continue to sell the cupcakes.
“It’s $2 a cupcake, all the money goes into fundraising and every little thing helps,” she said.
