Long term mine critic, Professor Mark Taylor of Sydney's Macquarie University, told the ABC’s Background Briefing program the mine has exceeded the hourly limit for sulphur dioxide emissions several days this year.
However Mount Isa Mines say they are meeting the target set by the state government’s environmental authority to meet the hourly limit 98 per cent of the time and Mr Pavetto has weighed in saying the criticism was nothing new and Mr Taylor was a “left-wing greenie” who was trying to shut down the mining industry,
“Mount Isa Mines has been open and accountable in everything they do and they wouldn’t want to harm their own workforce,” Mr Pavetto said.
“Mr Taylor can make his comments in Sydney but he wouldn’t dare do it in Mount Isa because he knows the community there is behind the mine.”
