The winner of more than 2300 races during his decorated career in Victoria, he gathered the grand slam of major races by winning the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate.
But it was as the rider of arguably Australia's greatest sprinter, Vain, that Hyland will be best remembered.
The son of Wilkes won 12 of his 14 starts, including the Golden Slipper, Champagne Stakes and Caulfield Guines in 1969.
Hyland has also been a trainer of note, having group 1 success with Saleous, Zarita and Bonaria.
The late Noel McCready, who rode Straight Draw to victory in the 1957 Melbourne Cup, will also be inducted, along with trainers Neville Begg and Cecil Godby.
Leading journalist and historian Les Carlyon and former ABC broadcaster Joe Brown are the 2016 inductees in the associate category.
Four horses — Sydeston, Merman, Luskin Star and Leilani — will be inducted.
