Off-contract Penrith Panthers hooker James Segeyaro insists he wants to stay at the club because he can "smell a premiership" around the corner.

The Panthers have held off negotiations with Segeyaro to allow him to get a few games under his belt coming off a broken arm suffered earlier in the season.

While negotiations are yet to begin, the Papua New Guinean has no intention to leave the club he believes is on the brink of producing something special.

"There hasn't been much conversation about next year," Segeyaro said.

"I've only played like three games. I can't really get any consistency. Once I get consistency we can have a broader picture of what's going to happen next year. I had a conversation at the start of the year in which he [coach Anthony Griffin] said he wanted me to play 80 minutes.

"We'll see what happens. I definitely [want to be here]. A premiership. I can smell a premiership."

At the start of the season Segeyaro was preparing to play 80 minutes each week, but has now been forced to bide his time coming off the bench.

While he is desperate to get back in the run-on side, he understands the reluctance to change a winning formula.

"I think 'Hook' [Griffin] is looking after me," Segeyaro said.

"The team has reached a certain point and he doesn't want to throw me in the deep end just yet. It's kind of hard for me because we played, then we had the [rep weekend] then we play again this weekend then have another bye. I can't get consecutive games together. Once I do that, I can really get my match fitness up to the state I need to give to the team.

"Hopefully then I'll be starting. We'll just have to wait and see after this weekend. I'm not really concerned about it. I just have to keep working hard. I'll do what's best for the team and if need be I'll play on the bench. We're winning games so why change a winning formula?"

Penrith are expected to be impacted by the Origin period with Matt Moylan, Josh Mansour, Bryce Cartwright and Trent Merrin all in contention.

However five-eighth Jamie Soward is adamant his teammates have no right to think beyond this weekend, insisting he would be disappointed if Origin was on their mind.

"I've got no idea what NSW will do. They've picked 55 sides since round one," Soward said.

"As a senior player in the group, and I know 'Moyza' will be the same being the skipper, we expect everyone to do a job on Sunday. At the end of the day you're remembered for what you did at your club, you're not remembered for playing two or three Origin games.

"As far as I'm concerned they are not on the brink. They'll be on the brink when the team is named. Sunday is all they should be worried about. I'd be disappointed if anyone in the group was thinking about anything but Sunday, two o'clock against the Titans."
