The winning team defeated Blackstar 32 to 30 at Alex Inch Oval on Saturday night.
However, Brothers were down by eight points at the beginning of the second half.
The scoreboard said 24 to 16 in favour of Blackstars when the siren called for half-time.
Brothers were the first team to get a try due to the diligence of Kye Aplin and the successful conversion by Dempsey.
But Blackstars were able to level up the score from that point on in the first half through the work of Cody Tully and Herbie Walden – easily the lead scorers of the game
Tully’s first goal for his team and Walden’s conversion put the score at 6-6. Shortly after, Walden was able to add another conversion following Sean Matthews’ try – therefore doubling their score.
Tully’s second try about 18 minutes into the game – with Walden’s third conversion – widened the margin. It widened further with Tully’s third try.
It may have meant an easy victory if the Brothers’ spirits were not lifted by Troyden Dempsey’s much needed try. Within three minutes his teammate Lance Cope was able to put another try on the scoreboard.
In the second half, the Brothers’ goal kickers including Brenton Cole were able to restore some balance on the scoreboard, therefore keeping the Blackstar boys on their toes.
Dale Dempsey had shown fine form in the first half by kicking the Brothers’ conversions – only failing once to secure the additional two points – and was able to maintain the momentum.
With approximately 10 minutes to go Brothers were able to come out ahead of their foes after a sudden goal by John Hohua.
Once again Dempsey was able to get the conversion – making the score 32 to 30 in the Brothers’ favour.
Of course, Blackstars were not going to take the loss of their lead gracefully.
Their front line rallied for a final push against the Brothers’ defence with only a minute 30 seconds on the clock, but it was all over when the Brothers’ were able to snatch back possession.
