Manager Customer Service Centres (North West), Cat Masterson, said the department was proud to support the Australian Road Safety Foundation campaign.
“Losing someone they love in a road crash is the terrifying reality for too many Queenslanders each year,” Cat said.
“But we can make a difference, and the key to road safety is in the hands of every road user – whether they drive a car, motorcycle, heavy vehicle or ride a bicycle.
“In conjunction with the Australian Road Safety Foundation, and other sponsors of Fatality Free Friday, we call on road users to be vigilant, respect other road users and be aware of the fatal five, which are the common causes of all road fatalities.”
Cat said while the focus of Fatality Free Friday was on one day, the overarching message of the campaign was that every road user had a role to play every day of the year.
“The campaign is more than just a single day, we are aiming for a longer term community change,” Cat said.
“This initiative raises the profile of road safety awareness, and we join the Australian Road Safety Foundation in encouraging all Queenslanders to drive safely.”
An inflatable key was at the Department of Transport and Main Roads office in Mount Isa on Friday, May 20 and Cloncurry on Tuesday, 24 May for community members to write their messages of road safety.
Cat and the North West Road Safety staff were happy with the response from the North West community to pledging their commitment to road safety during the regional tour of inflatable pledge ‘keys’.
“I would encourage every North West road user to pledge, and then put into practice what they have committed to. Let’s make our roads safer.”
