Former Geelong swingman Brown, 25, has played in all nine of Essendon's games this season after being given a second chance by the Bombers in last year's draft.

He had twice kicked three goals in his 23 games prior to Sunday, but went one better against the Saints.

But despite setting a new personal best tally, Brown didn't think it was his best performance.

"I don't think it was my best one. I think I've had better. There's still a lot of things to work on for me," Brown said.

Not that he was displeased with his showing. "I feel I'm tracking alright. I was pretty happy to kick four goals, which is a nice reward. But there's still a lot of things to work on.

"I just have to keep competing, taking those marks."

Brown has been sharing the forward line with fellow tall Joe Daniher. The ex-Cat said the pair were getting better at keeping out of each other's way.

"I think it took a couple of weeks to gel together.

"As long as we're moving and trying to keep out of each other's space, we're pretty dangerous."

The Dons trailed by 10 points at half-time, only for St Kilda to slam on 11 goals to five after the break and win by 46 points.

Brown said coach John Worsfold wanted more from his makeshift team.

"He was pretty happy with our first half, but he was pretty flat with the second half we produced. We'll just go back to training and work on the things we need to work on," Brown said.

"We're a young group that's still learning, but that's no excuse."
