A TOURISM and Events Queensland director was impressed with the reception at a function celebrating Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo’s newly announced status as a major event in the state’s calendar.

Status as a major event was significant to the rodeo because it increased the support that Tourism and Events Queensland gave the event, while officially recognising it attracted interstate and international visitors.

Already it has made a difference in representation.
TEQ Director of Event Sourcing and Servicing Peter Hunt has been in his position two years and three months, according to his LinkedIn account, yet on Monday he was speaking to the rodeo’s committee members, sponsors, and Rotarians on his first visit to the city.
And he would be at the Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo in August.
“I’ve never experienced this sort of reception at major investment events to be quite honest, it certainly speaks to the significance of the event to the region,” Mr Hunt said, at the civic centre.
“This event is a major event for Mount Isa regardless of whether TEQ said this is a major investment...I think what you have created here as a community is something incredible, something iconic that is up there with the other iconic events, not only in Queensland but nationally across Australia.”
Although Mr Hunt had never visited Mount Isa before – but would be taking his second trip to the rodeo in August – he had a connection to the event through his father.
In the late 1960s his father fulfilled a childhood dream of becoming a jackaroo by working at Thorntonia Station, 100 kilometres north east of Camooweal. In 1969 Mr Hunt’s father competed in the Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo, and was injured as a result.
