Mount Isa has seen an increase in residential fires over the last calendar year, with call outs to house fires rising from eight in 2014 to 13 last year. 

Mount Isa Fire and Rescue Service station officer Ian Loudon said it was essential for all residents to have working smoke detectors in their homes. 

“My recommendation would be, from a personal point of view, that you have a working smoke alarm in every bedroom,” Officer Loudon said. 

“You need to have an evacuation plan to get yourself out of the house. 

“The important thing is that once you’re out, you stay out.” 

Other recommendations from the Mount Isa Fire and Rescue crew include checking household appliances for faults and keeping both the inside and outside of the home free from clutter.
