Wallabies prop James Slipper believes Australia is duty-bound to send the touring English off in fine style as the countdown begins ahead of June 11's opening Test at Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium.

The 39 possibles for Australia will head into camp on the Sunshine Coast this weekend before coach Michael Cheika slices and dices until he finalises his first squad of the year to meet England and new coach Eddie Jones.

Slipper will be one of the certainties, assuming he makes it through a torrid week of physical torture unscathed, and says that while the All Blacks remain the benchmark for the Wallabies in terms of opposition, there remains a special thrill in burying the red rose.

That came to pass in spectacular fashion in the World Cup, when the Wallabies tipped England out of their own tournament with a record 33-13 (their biggest at Twickenham) victory. Bernard Foley starred, while England went into freefall before flashing the Eddie Jones Signal towards overcast skies.

Slipper expects a vastly improved team this winter in Australia and the Reds prop looks forward to these Tests like almost no other. Trying to win a Bledisloe might well defined the pursuits of this generation of Wallabies but scrapping with England taps into a rivalry that transcends the code. "It's across all sports. You always want to beat the old foe. I think the battles that we've had with English rugby have been special. You think about all the World Cups when we've crossed paths, it's always been memorable, whether the result has been for or against us," Slipper said.

"I'm sure the Poms will be pretty pumped up to come down and put in a big performance. And vice versa – we want to send them off the way they deserve. I get excited every Test match but especially against England. Going off what we did to them, how the World Cup panned out, I thought we played well that day. It's a new year now and we have to try and do that again."

Slipper missed the Jones era at the Reds by a year but knows just how big a personality the England boss remains. He said the players would do their best to tune out to any mind games from Jones and Cheika but conceded it could be highly entertaining when the jousting begins.

"The players will probably just concentrate on making the team and doing the job on the night. Eddie and Cheik, they're mates ... it will be fun. But competitive," he said.

Slipper praised the recall of former Wallabies and Reds skipper James Horwill, saying it was another example of how Cheika can think outside the square with his selections. And that, he said, keeps everyone right on their toes.

"He does things that aren't always in the text book. You don't know what to expect when Cheik is planning something. And sometimes I don't know if he knows his own plan but he always seems to come through," Slipper said.

"All of the players are pretty excited about what's going on and the direction the Wallabies are heading. We're pretty pumped  to get stuck into it."
