Dean Mumm has labelled a surprise win against the Chiefs on Friday evening as the Waratahs most important of their season and says it shows that NSW can beat anyone on their day, and more importantly, New Zealand teams in general.

NSW chalked up their third consecutive win in Sydney and in doing so ruined the Chiefs perfect record away from home. They also fell just short of equalling the most points ever scored against the Chiefs (46) in the club's 20-year history.

A victory at the death in Cape Town against the Stormers was discussed among the playing group as a potential season-defining moment, but a comprehensive win over the best New Zealand team in the competition has shown the sky is the limit for the Waratahs when they get their combinations and set plays in order.

"[They were] both significant moments in our season … it was another high pressure game," Mumm said. "It's nice to know that we're coming into big games and we can get results when we need. Going into a break this one's maybe even more important. It's important to know you can beat good sides and you can play well against good sides."

Mumm and eight other Waratahs from Friday's 45-25 triumph revelled in their success with a few well-earned beers and now they will make the trip to the Sunshine Coast on Sunday as part of a camp with the Wallabies.

The likes of Mumm, Michael Hooper, Bernard Foley and Israel Folau can go about their business over the next month knowing they have something special to look forward to when they return into the NSW set-up as opposed to three meaningless fixtures.

A trip to Tokyo against the struggling Sunwolves in the first week of July will be followed by a home clash with the Hurricanes before a final duel with the Blues at Eden Park; an unhappy hunting ground for Australian teams.

But the Waratahs' all-round performance that oozed class and a togetherness we have only seen sporadically from them this year has debunked the theory that Australian sides are simply not up to New Zealand standards.

"Criticism is there for both teams and it will be there going forward," Mumm said. "It is what it is. It doesn't affect us, it doesn't bother us, we don't sit there and stew on what happens, you've got to focus on what you can do and on the performance you can give. What you learn from last week into this week is you have to be up and on. When it comes to playing against a good side, whether that be a South African side or a Kiwi side, it's about being consistent.

"They've been a great side and we knew it was going to be a massive challenge. I think importantly for us it was a performance that we can be proud of and one that's in line with the team we want to be."
