The Mount Isa truck driver said he heard a tapping in the truck just before he was about to crush the rubbish load at 6am on Sunday, the ABC reported.
Detective Acting Senior Sergeant David Hall told the ABC the boy could have had a worse fate.
"I think this child is extremely lucky that he was not crushed," he told ABC Radio.
"And police take our hats off to the driver, who heard that tapping sound and made enquiries, otherwise it would have been a completely different story."
Police are talking to the boy’s family to determine why he was in a dumpster.
