Just two minutes before the starting siren defender Grimes withdrew after injuring a hamstring in the warm-up, leaving Troy Chaplin scrambling to change and warm-up in the rooms on his own.
He entered the game only 12 minutes into the first quarter when courageous small Steven Morris landed awkwardly after a marking contest, appearing to injure his knee or ankle.
Morris was taken from the ground on a stretcher and wasn't expected to appear in the rest of the game.
Meanwhile North Melbourne powered ahead, piling on goals while the Tigers floundered.
North Melbourne's star ruckman Todd Goldstein was a late withdrawal from the match with a knee complaint. He was replaced by Majak Daw. Also missing was North senior coach Brad Scott, who was struck down by a virus, leaving assistant coach Darren Crocker to take the coaching reins.
