But the Canberra junior isn't changing clubs or trying to steal opposition secrets. Steele is stepping into the Power's inner sanctum to support his best mate after his AFL debut.

Former Belconnen Magpies teammates Steele and Logan Austin will reunite on Sunday after Austin plays his first game for Port Adelaide against Collingwood at the MCG.

Just 24 hours after Steele was part of the Giants' clash against the Geelong Cats, he will swap his orange colours for best-mate duties to support Austin.

The MCG is a long way from the pair's junior days on the icy fields around Canberra, but they're living their childhood dream together and crossing enemy lines to share their excitement.

"He called me on Wednesday when he found out he was playing, and I asked if it'd be weird if I joined him in the Port sheds after the game," Steele said.

"I'll be there watching from the stands with his family for sure, and a lot of our old teammates from Belconnen will be there too.

"I was rapt for him when I found out. He was over the moon and so was I, we'd been talking to each other week to week and I'd ask whether he was close each week, and when Hombsch did his hammy I knew he was a chance."

Logan can expect plenty of support at the game, with the "Austin Powers cheer squad" consisting of family, friends and teammates, led by Belconnen Magpies first grade player Matt Kelly.

Logan said it was a unique feeling to be regarded as an AFL player alongside his best mate, and he was pleased that Steele would be there to cheer him on.

"When we both were coming through the juniors and the under 18s we were just happy to be playing footy, and as the draft approached and we both got picked up that was real excitement," Austin said.

"Even just getting drafted we were both pretty proud of each other, and now that we're both AFL players that's even better.

"I've had to wait a bit longer than Jack and he's playing really well for the Giants, I think it's really good for the region more than anything, there is plenty of talent up and coming through the Canberra region, which is even more exciting."

Steele and Austin played footy and cricket together from day dot, and have come through the Canberra ranks of Australian rules football to both be drafted in to the AFL in 2014.

Despite beginning their elite careers together in the GWS Giants academy, they were separated at the NAB Draft in which Steele went on to the Giants list as pick 24 and Austin was picked for Port Adelaide at 69.

Steele admits it was tough to go on without Logan when he wasn't picked up by the Giants, but he knew that they both had taken another step closer to making their dream a reality.

"We've obviously dreamed about playing AFL footy since we were pretty young, but never really thought it was a possibility until we started playing well in under 18's and got invited to the draft," Steele said.

"I was pretty shattered when he went to Port, especially when I found out that the Giants would have taken Logan if they had the next pick, but we both ended up on an AFL list and you can't complain about that."

"Logan's been waiting for this moment for a very long time. I reckon he'll be shitting himself, to be honest. It doesn't get bigger than the Magpies at the 'G to make your debut."
