Just like the infamous summer of 1932/33, England have drawn first blood against Australia in a fiery contest and Eddie Jones has kept his blemish-free record with the old enemy intact, running out 11-point victors against the Wallabies in Brisbane.

Owen Farrell reversed England's kicking woes from the Wales game last month, booting nine from ten in comparison to Bernard Foley's three from six to orchestrate England's first ever win in Brisbane and set the stage for an even more mouth-watering affair in Melbourne next week.

Foley kicked a penalty goal with less than three minutes remaining to put Australia behind 32-28 - a sign Australia wanted to go for the win rather than run the risk of coming away with a draw - but a try in the dying seconds to English substitute Jack Nowell put the icing on the cake for the tourists in what was their equal-biggest victory against the Wallabies in Australia.

Jones promised aggressive "Bodyline" rugby and, in keeping with the analogy, his men dished out a barrage of bouncers to Australia's forwards who were on the back foot in a number of crucial scrums, which will no doubt give Mario Ledesma a busier week than normal.

Two tries to Michael Hooper, both on the right sideline, and a bustling five-pointer to Tevita Kuridrani with ten minutes remaining were ultimately in vain for Australia as Jones got one over his old Randwick teammate Michael Cheika.

For eight months and eight days, England had stewed on their World Cup embarrassment at Twickenham, but although they went into this highly anticipated fixture as underdogs, there was just as much pressure and expectation heaped on them.

A smile out of Michael Cheika pre-game is like getting blood out of a stone, but there was Jones, strolling on the fringes as England warmed up, sporting a trademark cheeky grin.

A disallowed try to Foley – due to an obstruction – was a bitter enough pill to swallow for Cheika even before his chief playmaker and Samu Kerevi made a series of boo-boos to gift Jonathan Joseph England's first five-pointer.

If David Pocock was Australia's Donald Bradman, then James Haskell was England's Harold Larwood as he put an early bone-crunching hit on the Wallabies No.8 – a clear sign of the physical style Jones wanted his players to implement.

But punch doesn't necessarily equal points as Hooper, after going so close two phases before, opened the scoring in the ninth minute on the right edge thanks to a handy ball from debutant Kerevi.

England had barely made a dent in Australia's half when Foley put Israel Folau into a gap to go 10 points up in 16 minutes.

A triumphant punch of the air from Foley, the man who tortured England with 28 points in their last outing, suggested he thought Saturday evening would be another successful affair.

Instead, it was his most inconsistent game in a Wallabies jersey for a long time.

Jones wanted fireworks and he got them. England got up in the faces of Australia's forwards and even assistant coach Nathan Grey, who after trying to catch a ball near the sideline was shoved by England fullback Mike Brown. He did well not to retaliate.

Rob Simmons was helped from the field in the 25th minute with what appeared to be a knee injury, but the 325 caps on the bench at Cheika's disposal meant he could bring on a fairly handy replacement in James Horwill.

Of Australia's three starting debutants, Rory Arnold was the most impressive with his direct, bulldozing runs at England's line and willingness to not back down – unsurprising given his size – in a few mini scraps.
