IT was a great weekend down in Cloncurry and it was a privilege to attend the Cattleman’s Dinner on Thursday night and then the Cloncurry Show on Friday and Saturday.

In an early version of our online story I suggested that 220 people attended the Cattleman’s Dinner but I was quickly corrected on the matter.
My estimate of 220 was based on the fact there was 22 tables and I thought there was 10 to each table.
It appears I cannot count, not even to tally up the number of people on my table. There was 14 not 10, which means there were over 300 people there not 220.
It was a major feat of logistics to sit that many people in the Community Precinct and then feed them but organisers rose to the challenge with aplomb.
With then-federal treasurer Joe Hockey the guest of honour at the last three events, it was a difficult job to find someone to fill his shoes but MLA “lambassador” Sam Kekovich rose to the challenge.
Mr Kekovich was very funny but his humour was ribald and most of it not repeatable in a family newspaper.
I did, however, like his line about everything at IKEA needing assembly. “I bought a pillow, and they gave me a duck,” he said.
On a more serious note, the night was a great opportunity to showcase Cloncurry’s rich pastoral heritage and for its many illustrious cattlemen and women to get together and celebrate their achievements.
It was also the perfect start to the two day show that kicked off on Friday – although the cattle judging took place a day earlier so the winners could be feted at the dinner.
The show is a testament to the hard work and commitment of Edwina Shepherd and her hard working team of committee members, volunteers and sponsors.
I’ve been to many shows across Queensland but Cloncurry can rank with the best with its efficient organisation, can-do attitude and friendliness a winning combination.
Crowds were a bit slow in the mornings but families gathered on both afternoons to give the Recreation Grounds a real party atmosphere and there was plenty of entertainment on offer.
This weekend it’s over to Mount Isa. DB
