The Dons are bottom of the ladder after 12 rounds, and are favoured to pick up their first wooden spoon in 83 years.  Should they finish last, they will have pick one this year unless the AFL intervenes and grants a priority selection to another club - most likely the Brisbane Lions.

Koch claimed said on Wednesday morning the game's image would suffer if Essendon got the first selection having had their list decimated by Court of Arbitration for Sport's suspensions of 12 current Bombers in January.

"It does not seem right, not a great look," Koch said on Channel Seven's Sunrise program - which he hosts.

Campbell responded on Sunday morning, contending that commenting about other clubs was inappropriate for a club chief. "David's had some strong views on the issue," Campbell told Channel Nine.

"Without providing too much defence to him, he's got a difficult role where he's in the media a lot of the time. We've got a firm policy where we don't comment on other clubs. We don't think it's professional, we don't think it's appropriate."

Campbell added that he would take up the matter with Port chief executive Keith Thomas, who declined to comment to Fairfax Media until he had spoken to his Bombers counterpart.

Campbell reiterated that AFL chief Gillon McLachlan had assured the Bombers they would pick first if they finished last. "With respect to the No. 1 draft pick I think the rules are very clear. Gill was quite categoric in his address to this issue very quickly after the CAS decision and I think the club has received the most significant sanctions in the history of the game from a governance perspective, and now the players.

"I feel it's appropriate and reasoned that the club do - if it does finish on the bottom of the ladder - receive the No. 1 draft pick."
