The list runs like this: three premierships, three All-Australians, one best and fairest, AFL Hall of Fame, Adelaide team of the decade, three time leading goal-scorer, eleven goals in the Crows' two grand finals.

Ben can't remember any of it: he was only a few years old when Darren played the last of his 230 games, an elimination final back in 2001.

But 15 years later he is giving the Crows and Hawthorn something to think about, as a possible father-son recruit at this year's draft.

The 18-year-old was one of South Australia's better players in their win over Western Australia in Sunday's second-round under-18 championships game, due largely to his class.

The midfielder isn't big - 175-centimetres - and he's not quick. But he is smart, and managed to avoid getting tied up in tackles, over and over again.

He took time with the ball, he used it to find teammates, he took a gutsy mark ducking back into defence and snapped a sharp goal during the second quarter.

Should he prove good enough, Ben could finish the year as Adelaide's first-ever father-son draftee, after a couple of near misses.

The Crows tried desperately to secure Bryce Gibbs - the son of former Glenelg player Ross - only to be told that not enough of his 253 games were played within the qualifying period.

The club had access to the sons of a handful of SANFL clubs, but Gibbs wound up becoming Carlton's No. 1 pick at the 2006 draft instead.

Adelaide also missed out by four games on Brayden Maynard, the son of Ross Gibbs' former teammate Peter, who was drafted to Collingwood two years ago instead.

Jarman has had conversations with both the Hawks and Crows - who have spent a bit more time on him, and loom as his more likely destination - but wants to make sure he is good enough to be drafted before worrying about whether he will end up at either team.

"I've talked to both clubs briefly, but it's still a very long way away," Jarman said.

"I'm just focussed on playing footy for South Australia at the moment. If I'm good enough I'm good enough, if I'm not I'm not, so I just want to play as well as I can and see what happens.

"I sort of try and block it all out. Obviously Dad was a great player and I'm proud of what he's done in footy, but I'm my own player and I just want to try and make a name for myself."

That said, Jarman is taking all the advice he can get: not only from his father, but from his uncle Andrew and others.

"I didn't see much of my dad play, but he gets the video tapes out every now and then and shows me a bit of his footage. He wasn't too bad," Jarman said.

"He's been good and so has Andrew. He loves giving me feedback on my footy and shooting me messages every now and then.

"Those two are great and so is my mum, I should give her a mention. She loves coming to watch me play and criticising my game and giving me advice on things as well."
