But will he really?

Already Sydney's 2005 premiership coach has been linked with a move to Brisbane, which I just can't see happening. It's hard to envision the Lions having the cash to pay out Justin Leppitsch and also afford Roos. Plus Brisbane got spurned by Roos last time it pursued him and footy clubs aren't really great at eating humble pie.

Collingwood, who the Dees comfortably beat on Monday, could be different story.

Nathan Buckley still has a year to run on his contract. But if the Pies are in a similar spot next year - or even slightly better - there might well be appetite for change.

You can see why Collingwood would be a situation that appeals to Roos. He's about to turn 53 and might not get the chance to walk into a better opportunity than the Pies.

I don't want to make excuses for Collingwood's current form but its injury list is horrendous.

There's not much of it that wouldn't be in the first 22 if fit: Darcy Moore, Alex Fasolo, Jamie Elliott, Taylor Adams, Tom Langdon, Tim Broomhead and Mathew Scharenberg would all be around the place. And that's not mentioning Dane Swan, who would be playing now if not for injury but likely isn't part of Buckley's plans for next year.

With more luck on the injury front - and less time in the doctor's rooms - Collingwood wouldn't then be a rebuild job and I think that would be attractive to Roos. As a point of reference,  throw Nat Fyfe, Aaron Sandilands and Michael Johnson back into Freo's team on what the Dockers have produced lately and think about how that would change things.

Roos' style of coaching is to add layers. Usually that starts with building a defence and adding attacking stuff through the middle and forward parts of the ground (which has been Melbourne's biggest improvement of recent times - even if Goodwin seems to be getting most of the credit).

At Collingwood the forward line would be pretty well set when Moore, Fasolo and Elliott come back (you can forget about Travis Cloke). The Pies are leaking plenty of goals right now so fixing the backline would be Roos' one big task and one that fits his coaching style.

Age-wise, the Pies present an ideal profile. Their oldest player is Swan (32) and he'd be gone by the time Roos would arrive. The captain, Scott Pendlebury, is 28 and a five-time All-Australian.

At the start of the year Collingwood had nine players with between 50 and 100 games of experience, eight players yet to make their debut and 12 first-round draft picks on its list, five of them selected inside the past five years.

The conventional wisdom is that Melbourne finishes between ninth and 12th this year, then goes on to be a genuine contender in the next few years.

I wouldn't mind betting that Collingwood does something similar, with potentially even more success.

And that Roos is the man at the helm.

As our cousins in Europe struggle to keep their emotions in check, how heartening was it to see 60,000 Collingwood and Melbourne fans march side-by-side to the MCG on Monday - without a single flare in sight.
