Superhero Scramble organiser Alison Whitehead said the kids’ sporting event combined physical and mental challenges.
”It’s a mixture of an Amazing Race and physical challenge for the kids.
“It’s a race similar to one that I’ve been watching over in New Zealand for a few years, and I’ve always wanted to bring it to Mount Isa, so I went over to New Zealand and watched them run their race, and I thought I’d revamp it and change a few things and start it up in Mount Isa,” Ms Whitehead said.
She said she hopes to have 200 children and parents participate in the events.
“Superhero Scramble itself is for ages six to 12, they have to compete with their parent, and they’ll do a range of 10 activities,” Ms Whitehead said.
“Then there’s Superhero Squirts, which is for kids under six that don’t want to miss out on having a bit of fun.
“Their race will run first, it’ll take about 15 minutes for them to do a few challenges with mum or dad, and cross the finish line,” she said.
Ms Whitehead said the location of the event gave the participants three kilometres of safe distance to cover during the competition.
“Using Buchanan Park makes it easy, because they don’t have the concerns of crossing roads,” she said.
“The kids, I want them to do some physical activity, because it really concerns me, the levels of obesity in Australia.
“It’s something that I’ve watched, especially in Mount Isa, for a long time,” Ms Whitehead said.
She said children in Mount Isa needed outlets and activities to engage in to increase physical activity.
“Unless people are getting out there and organising events and encouraging people to come along kids will sit on their iPhones or iPads or computers.
“I think this is a way to get them outdoors and also to bond with their parent or guardian,” Ms Whitehead said.
“Exercise doesn’t have to be a running race, it can be fun,” she said.
The sporting event will be held on July 17 at Buchanan Park, starting at 10am.
