Radio station Triple M will not take disciplinary action against any of its employees who were involved in a controversial discussion surrounding senior football journalist Caroline Wilson.

The station has finally released a statement, apologising to Wilson for an on-air discussion - lead by two club presidents in Eddie McGuire and James Brayshaw - that centred around Wilson being held under water.

The broadcaster also said all employees involved in the discussion have been counselled.

The statement comes as AFL chief Gillon McLachlan supported the Richmond Football Club for its stance to boycott the Triple M football team for this coming weekend.

"That's their voice. This is what happens when you give the opportunity for issues like this to be talked about and for people to take positions," McLachlan said at an AFL press conference on Wednesday to announce Tanya Hosch as the league's new head of diversity.

"With respect to Triple M, I do think it's odd that their management hasn't taken a position. But we'll see."

McLachlan said one of the positives to come from the ordeal was to see people making a stand against disrespectful language towards women.

"Part of it is pretty liberating to see people making stands across our industry and young, progressive voices coming out through the playing group and different voices," he said.

"That's the power of our game. The decision we made is up for debate and people are debating it. But our game has been really clear about where it stands and why it thinks it's unacceptable."

While Triple M has apologised for the discussion and admitted to the comments being "inappropriate, unacceptable amd disrespectful", the company says it won't take disciplinary action against any of its employees.

"Triple M has carefully considered whether further disciplinary action is required and believes that the public censure of the comments and the actions taken by the AFL community should be a sufficient incentive for a change in behaviour," the statement read.

"The Triple M employees involved in an on-air discussion before the Freeze MND have been counselled and each have apologised for their remarks and acknowledged the importance of stamping out language and behaviour that encourages or appears to tacitly endorse violence, most particularly against women.

"The broadcast staff of all Triple M stations have been reminded that language of this nature is not acceptable and there is no context that makes it acceptable. We recognise that continued and further education is necessary to ensure that all staff understand what is acceptable and what won't be tolerated."

The station will also donate its on-ground digital signage this weekend to White Ribbon

Meantime, it's believed the Richmond Football Club's boycott of Triple M this weekend will last just the one week, with the club keen to send a strong message to the rest of the football industry.

It's unlikely that any other Victorian teams will follow suit - with several having the bye - although discussions will continue next week if the Tigers decide to continue the blanket ban.

Richmond star Jack Riewoldt announced the boycott during his regular spot on AFL 360.

"There's been discussion had at the footy club about how we felt about it and how everything went down," Riewoldt told Fox Footy on Tuesday night.

"The club's pretty strong in its stance and our club's a real leader for supporting women's rights.

"The football club's not going to partake in anything with Triple M this week, and it hasn't been set a final date yet, so it may continue on."

Ahead of his 200th game, Carlton star Bryce Gibbs said while he wasn't sure if Carlton would join the boycott against Triple M, he said the issue had been spoken about at the club.

"We've definitely spoke within the four walls of the club about equality between male and female," Gibbs told SEN.

"We're taking a few stances at the club and putting a few programs in place so that we can help educate the players, who can then help educate the public."
