Laurie Daley will resist the urge to make sweeping changes to blood NSW's Generation Next, insisting the bulk of the squad which faces a State of Origin clean sweep in Sydney will retain their spots for the dead rubber in three weeks time.

Daley is likely to draft in another halfback with Adam Reynolds all-but-out of the ANZ Stadium clash on July 13.

The South Sydney star is bracing for the worst after he was told his season could be over following a shoulder injury suffered in Origin II.

Reynolds popped his shoulder out of its socket in Wednesday night's series defeat,  and will undergo an MRI scan when he returns to Sydney on Thursday afternoon.

At the very least Reynolds is expected to be ruled out of the dead rubber at ANZ Stadium on July 13, however there are fears he might have just played his last game for the season.

A NSW official confirmed Reynolds' shoulder popped out and back in during the second half of the clash at Suncorp Stadium, but wouldn't know the full extent of the damage until the results of the scans.

Having plunged to a 10th series loss in the last 11 years — the third in four years under Daley's watch — NSW face the embarrassing prospect of playing in a half-empty arena when Queensland are officially handed another interstate crown. And Daley is not in the mood to give away more Origin jerseys having blooded six debutants this series.

Asked whether he would ring the changes, Daley said: "No. We're there to win. We'll be there to win game three. I would rather [young blood] play when you know they're ready, not when you think they're ready. I want to give them the opportunity to come into the team and be around it and when they're in the team it's not a shock. Whether it's right or wrong I don't know, but that's the way I operate."

NSW skipper Paul Gallen's spot for the dead rubber will be questioned given he intends to retire from Origin at the end of the series, but the Cronulla brute suggested he wanted to captain his state for a record 16th time. "I'm shattered we lost that game," Gallen said. "I'll think about my career at another time and hopefully I've got one game to go. As Laurie said there's a lot of pride to play for in game three and as he said to us there is no such thing as a dead rubber."

Dane Gagai bagged a memorable hat-trick to tie teammate Greg Inglis' record of five tries from his first three Origin games, but Queensland's 26-16 win at Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday night didn't come without a mighty scare.

NSW centre's Michael Jennings' fingertip denied Tyson Frizell a second try on debut inside the last 10 minutes which would have gifted Maloney a kick to put NSW ahead. But Queensland iced the game when Corey Oates strolled over on the end of Darius Boyd's second assist."I believe we're getting closer, I think the players believe we're getting closer ... but at some point we've got to draw a line in the sand and say effort is good and we've got to convert," Daley said.

"The last thing I want to do is keep walking into press conferences and talking about effort ... it's got to be about effort and execution. We were beaten by the better team. Our execution again wasn't good enough at critical moments. We've got no complaints."
