Dragons back-rower Tyson Frizell has backed the NSW development player strategy amid calls for Blues coach Laurie Daley to hand debuts to a host of young players in the Origin III dead rubber.

With Queensland having already locked up this year's series there has been a push for the likes of Bryce Cartwright, Joey Leilua, James Tedesco and Wade Graham to be given Origin debuts in preparation for future series.

Daley has slowly brought about generational change having let Anthony Watmough and Luke Lewis go in recent seasons while Origin veterans Beau Scott, Ryan Hoffman and Trent Merrin were all passed over for this year's series. The Blues 10th series loss in 11 years has prompted calls for skipper Paul Gallen and fellow veterans Robbie Farah and Greg Bird to make way for the next generation but Daley has repeatedly said that he won't throw any rookies to the wolves prematurely.

Many have pointed to Frizell's outstanding debut on Wednesday as evidence young players can handle the step-up but he  credited his time in camp as 18th man over the past two seasons with helping him handle the Suncorp cauldron.

"I certainly  think if I hadn't had that experience of coming into camp and was just thrown in the deep end it would have been a lot tougher for me," Frizell, 25, said. "You only really get one chance to prove yourself in those big games and all the development stuff and being 18th man did really help me. It really helped my development and it gave me that drive to push myself to play a lot better. I think it's the right set-up and it was definitely a big help for me."

Daley said after the match that Frizell's Scott Satleresque chase on runaway winger Dane Gagai will be replayed in Blues camp for years to come as an example of what makes an Origin player.

"It's certainly something nice to hear," Frizell said. "It's something we spoke about that when you get given that jersey you're given a responsibility and at that stage of the game it was something I just had to do. I got checked a bit at the start and just did my best. I thought I could probably get him even though I probably shouldn't have been able to get anywhere near him.

"I was hopeful of getting as close as I could to make a play before he got to the try-line. Unfortunately I couldn't finish it off in the end but I think whoever was in my position would've done the same thing."

Frizell sat out Friday's captain's run but will play against Newcastle on Saturday and said he'll be high on confidence on the back of his Blues debut.  "You definitely take a bit of confidence out of being on that stage and you hope to take some positives out of that and transfer that into club footy," Frizell said. "I've actually pulled up pretty sweet, I've only got a couple of bumps and bruises. It's not going to be easy on the body but it's something that has to be done.

"I've done it before [after City-Country] and so have other players so I'll be sweet. Everyone does it and I'll be switched on ready to go."
