By 10am, about 3500 customers were without power, but overnight a combined total of 38,000 people had lost their connection.

"It was a big night for crews," Energex Spokesperson Danny Donald said.

SES Queensland received 45 calls for help since Friday, mostly regarding fallen trees and structural damage.

Kemp Place Fire Station in Fortitude Valley lost some roof panels with the road outside closed while crews secured the building.

Wilds winds continued on Saturday morning with Gannet Cay off the Rockhampton coast experiencing 54km/h winds and Hamilton Island recording gusts of up to 50km/h.

There is a strong wind warning currently in place for south-east Gulf of Carpentaria, the Townsville coast and Mackay coast.

The strong winds also brought cold temperatures, with Applethorpe, near the New South Wales border, recording 1.4 degrees on Saturday morning and Oakey, near Toowoomba, registered 2.5 degrees.

Roma, 500 kilometres west of Brisbane, experienced 2.1 degrees and Kingaroy, north-west of Brisbane, dropped to 5.2 degrees.

Wild weather lashed south-east Queensland overnight, with "mean winds" causing 38,000 people to lose power.

Energex crews worked through the night to restore connections with the peak of the outages coming at 1am Saturday when 22,000 customers were without power across the south-east.

At 8am Saturday, about 5000 were still without power, with crews working to restore the service.

Energex had prepared for the strong winds and cancelled planned works to concentrate on restoring power overnight.

Large trees and debris caused access problems for the crews and it is expected to take longer to restore power to 400 homes in the Gold Coast hinterland as a result.

"The crews have had a good reprieve this morning with the winds gone and now they're getting stuck it into it," Energex spokesperson Danny Donald said.

"We appreciate customers' patience, we know there are outages and crews are out now doing their best."

The Bureau of Meteorology the strong winds were caused by a low pressure trough which came across from Western Australia.

As it moved off the coast it left strong south-westerly winds in its wake.

The strongest winds were recorded at Brisbane Airport, at 76 km/h, and Gatton, where gusts of up to 69 km/h were registered.

"The worst of it is over, there is a little bit of wind around this morning, but that should be the end of it and we should have a lovely day with hardly any wind," Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Kevin Hutchins said.

An SES Queensland spokesperson said 39 calls for help had been received overnight, mainly in relation to fallen trees and structural damage.

The worst hit areas were in the Gold coast and Moreton Bay region, including Helensvale, Samsonvale, Samford Valley, Upper Kedron and Petrie.

The SES said they were expecting more calls throughout Saturday as residents assess the damage.
