The S Kilda captain, 33, made headlines following his side's round nine win over Essendon, after it was reported he had lashed out at marketing and operations manager Kelley Musster after she asked him to take more selfies with fans at Etihad Stadium.

It was reported Riewoldt had been upset with his team's performance, despite the win.

He subsequently apologised to Musster and to the entire Saints' playing list.

Discussing the incident on Monday night, Riewoldt said he was disappointed with the media coverage the incident had generated.

"There was a bit of criticism that I didn't engage with fans after the game, which was incorrect. It was just not reported correctly at all, which was disappointing," Riewoldt told Fox Footy.

Asked what he had learnt from the run-in, he said: "To be mindful of your surroundings at all times.

"I've always really prided myself on my respect for the fans and being able to engage. Certainly as a football club we've done a lot of work in that space as well.

"I think we all learnt, and have moved on."

Riewoldt recently signed a one-year contract extension, tying him to the club for a 17th season.

He is on track to break Carlton great Stephen Kernahan's record for most games as a club captain.
