“They” were the all female team of “Your Pace or Mine” and the challenge the was Oxfam charity 100km trailwalk in Brisbane on June 17-18.
The team comprising ABC North West broadcaster Emma Cillekens, outgoing Spinifex teacher Ellie Jeffcoat, former Mount Isan Rachael Moulden and Brisbane friend Jane Stafford completed the gruelling non-stop walk in an incredible time of 31 hours and nine minutes.
Emma Cillekens said they had set the even more ambitious goal of completing the course in 30 hours but it proved tougher than they imagined.
“The gradient was a lot worse than we predicted when we studied the map,” Emma said.
“The hills were so steep that one friend had to slide down some of them on her bottom.”
Taking place in the middle of winter, freezing conditions were a distinct possibility and they were well rugged up.
“We had beanies and jumpers for when it got cold at night but it wasn’t too bad as there was a lot of cloud cover,” she said.
“We were lucky because they were actually predicting rain but all we got was a light sprinkle and the rain didn’t arrive until after we finished.”
They were also lucky with injuries with the worst being “blisters and busted feet” despite the dangers of walking through the night.
“It was a great feeling to cross the finish line together with the support of family and friends who were there to greet us with champagne at the end,” Emma said.
Ellie Jeffcoat, who is about to move to Perth with her partner, agreed it was a great achievement.
“We were walking all night in crazy conditions but it felt good at the end,” Ellie said.
“At the time I swore I’d never do it again but now I can see the appeal again.”
The crew had set a fundraising target of $3000 for Oxfam charity work and by walk end they had raised over $3700.
“We were really happy with that, but it’s still open to donate,” Emma said.
