The sensitive details of the tribute will emerge at some stage before the Crows take on Melbourne on July 3, one year on from when the Adelaide coach lost his life.

Fittingly, the Walsh inner-sanctum, led by his wife Meredith and a select group including some key leaders of the Adelaide Football Club, will gather around a tree dedicated to the former coach – one with a special significance and spread at its roots with the mulch created from the sea of flowers left almost one year ago as a collective salute outside the Crows' home ground.

The ceremony is one of a number of subtle acknowledgments which will play out over the coming days as the Crows remain privately organised but publicly silent on just how various individuals are dealing with July 3.

The sad circumstances surrounding the impending anniversary of Walsh's death became more so for Adelaide as the club became aware of the impact of yet another dreadful date upon the Walsh family.

The fact that the Crows have been scheduled to travel to the MCG to play Melbourne on the actual day their coach lost his life only truly crystallised for them after the season had started. They would clearly have preferred otherwise but in a sense remain relieved it looms as an away game.

But club bosses are aware such regrets remain minuscule in the giant scheme of the Walsh family's ongoing grief. Meredith has begun the task of rebuilding her life; selling up, moving into a new home and working part-time as she awaits her son Cy's next court date at the end of July. Not until Cy's fate has been determined can his mother truly take the next difficult step.

It has been decided that there will be no major ceremony on Sunday although to hazard a calculated guess the Crows' banner will invoke the spirit of their coach of just 12 games. "Get the job done" was his best remembered mantra.

In fact Phillip Walsh's wife — who has been haunted already by birthdays and anniversaries of happier times — will leave town before this one and after the tree ceremony, as will Walsh's closest friends Sharon and Graeme Watt and Rob Snowdon who spoke at his memorial. If Meredith had her way the day would pass without comment at all.

The Crows issued her with an open invitation to every club game at the start of the season and she has attended the Adelaide Oval as their guest but will not on this occasion.

Certainly the club has been strangely silent about Walsh, reportedly due to a combination of respect for the grieving Meredith and to make the week as simple as possible for those players who still struggle on occasion with the loss of their larger-than-life coach.

The generally accessible club chief Andrew Fagan has chosen not to speak publicly to date about how the club will handle the sensitive milestone and nor would chairman Rob Chapman comment on any plans surrounding Walsh.

That pair met more than a week ago along with coach Don Pyke and football boss David Noble to address the occasion of July 2 and all that has emerged from those talks is that the milestone as previously mentioned was difficult and highly sensitive for all those close to Walsh.

For Pyke, who did not know his predecessor, the task of how to address the occasion will be guided in part by his players who will cope with the anniversary in various ways. This was demonstrated by Taylor Walker at his press conference on Monday when the Walsh-anointed leader made it clear that for him some of his significant reflections upon their relationship will remain his alone.

When tragedy befalls a sporting organisation such as took place for Phillip Walsh and the Adelaide Crows last winter, the delicate balance between life and sport becomes more fragile and potentially brittle.

What was determined by the Crows' bosses is that Meredith is priority No. 1 and the players No. 2.

Being July and being the AFL and being the Crows where they are at this juncture of the 2016 season; the club has a game to win and potentially maybe even a premiership.

To echo Walsh, and the words which closed his memorial last year delivered by the chaplain of the Adelaide Football Club: "Come on! Get up. Get on with it and get the job done."
