Composer Tamil Rogeon - a Hawthorn fan - will on September 22 bring the full gut-wrenching drama of the 2010 drawn grand final between St Kilda and Collingwood to life with an original soundtrack performed by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and performed at Hamer Hall.

The Draw: A Symphony will feature a big-screen replay of the classic game, which saw the Saints go into the match as underdogs and overcome a 24-point half time deficit to be one wonky bounce away from winning their first grand final since 1966. Cue St Kilda fans wailing and gnashing of teeth.

And if you think the Saints haven't had a good soundtrack since the old Social club disco closed in the 1980s, think again.

Rogeon, a violinist and a current Honorary Fellow of Melbourne University's school of contemporary music, maintains that the tension inherent in any grand final between the Magpies and Saints is the key to the drama that unfolded on the day.

"This game struck me because the subject matter of a draw is really frustrating," he says. "It's what nobody expected.

"That's a very interesting ground to cover and to explore musically because it deals with an existential crisis you know, no one really knows what they are or what's going on once the siren sounded and the teams were deadlocked.

"Collingwood have lost so many grand finals and St Kilda have been in so few and in some respects it's no coincidence that it was a draw because both teams didn't know how to win a grand final."

When planning to score the game Rogeon said there were some key moments that stood out, and not just the denouement of the final siren.

"It was the big marking of the final quarter and also the bounce and Collingwood's inability to kick a goal ... the psychological pressure that implied on the team was immense."

Despite the missed opportunity, Rogeon believes Saints fans may still get some joy from his work, arguing that the bravery on display more than made up for the disastrous loss in the replay.

"Well, you know St Kilda were very good and they played a really good brand of football that year and that St Kilda had a really special bond and dynamic that you could argue many St Kilda teams haven't," he says.

"They were a particularly bonded groups of players and they were a a champion team ... there's so much solidarity in that group and how they went about their football it is really great to watch. There commitment to each other was very special."

And the big moment when a wonky bounce eludes Stephen Milne in the 30th minute and the scores are levelled? What instruments has be bought in to play?

"I think it's a combination of disaster and surprise," says Rogeon cryptically.

Ultimately though, the composer thinks this might be his only football score, admitting that he couldn't see himself scoring a six hour ring cycle-like dramatisation of Hawthorn's flags from 2013, 14 and 15.

"It's like a very long opera," he laughs. "This one is just perfect."
