The Waratahs say there will be no post-June Test series hangover for their Wallabies stars who are fit and raring to go with a bonus point firmly in their sights against the Sunwolves in Tokyo.

Of the 11 Waratahs involved in the Australia-England series, Wycliff Palu and Nick Phipps are the only two casualties from the whitewash, along with Sekope Kepu who has taken a break for the rest of the Super Rugby season.

Waratahs coach Daryl Gibson said Palu was unlikely to overcome a shoulder injury in time for Saturday afternoon's game (3pm AEST), and that Phipps is expected to come off the bench – a decision made with his workload in mind.

Criticism has been hurled at Phipps in the wake of Australia's series loss to England and with the impending return of Will Genia for the Rugby Championship, the next few games will be of even greater significance for Phipps.

"I think Nick's probably the best player in the world when the ball's nice and clean around the ruck and I think the English did a really lovely job at disrupting that area," Gibson said. "That really slowed his momentum. He's done a lot of work this year around that area I think that's one thing he'll continue to work on.

"Nick's started in every game for us, started every game for the Wallabies. Matt Lucas has come on and done really well in the time he's had at NSW, so it's a good reward for him and he deserves a start."

Gibson has gone above and beyond to best manage the workloads of his Australian representatives this week.

Skipper Michael Hooper arrived in Tokyo on Thursday after the main squad, while Israel Folau was also granted an extra rest day earlier in the week.

There were players such as Rob Horne who got stuck into training on Monday, but for the best part this week it has been about ensuring the freshest possible bodies are there on Saturday.

"Daryl's been really good and open wanting to know how we are feeling," Hooper said. "He was good to give me a couple of training sessions off to the point where I feel really refreshed and really keen to go this weekend. Credit to some of the guys, they didn't even want a break. Fantastic to see.

"It's never a burden to have to get ready and play for NSW. It's something that myself and all the other Wallabies love doing, playing for NSW. We want to pick up where we left off."

The Sunwolves are a largely unknown quantity. A solitary win against the Jaguares in round nine was a rare highlight in an uninspiring year given the hype for Japanese rugby after the World Cup.

A bonus point is most definitely there for the taking, and even though Gibson says that has not been explicitly discussed, mathematically it has come down to this; win three games and you should be fine.

"If you do the maths, one of us is going to win the conference, and you have to say the Brumbies have the easier run home there and if we win our three games we're pretty confident we'll pick up that wildcard spot given the New Zealand teams play each other," Gibson said. "As much as I say you've got to win three games, it's a lot harder than I'm making it sound."

The Wallabies' thumping at the hands of Eddie Jones' England may be a blessing in disguise for the Waratahs though, with Hooper saying there was plenty of determination to make amends for a forgettable June period.

"I think the biggest thing for us Wallabies coming back into the Tahs is we want to be a part of a winning team and a winning changeroom again and we're hungry for that as we were in that series," Hooper said. "We're willing to come back and translate that into Waratahs wins."
