On a positive note, the Brumbies No.8 said the bittersweet emotion of having made his Super Rugby debut only to have it ruined by an ankle injury in the fourth minute meant at least he would never forget it.

He'll undergo tests over the weekend to determine the extent of the damage.

It had been a Cinderella story until the moment the 22-year-old landed awkwardly on Queensland Reds skipper James Slipper's foot at a lineout and he rolled his ankle.

He lay on the ground in obvious pain before the trainer strapped it and he tried to push on, but he was forced to come off shortly afterwards.

Having played a big role in Brisbane City's NRC championship last year, Hyne drove to Canberra to chase his Super Rugby dream with nothing more than the offer to train with the Brumbies during their pre-season.

He impressed so much they offered him a development contract and a couple of injuries later he found himself pulling on the No.8 jersey for a dream debut against his old state.

With Wallabies star David Pocock (eye socket) and Jordan Smiler (knee) both out, Hyne was given his chance at the back of the Brumbies' pack.

"Leading up to it, as cliched as it sounds, it was a dream come true. It still is, but obviously it didn't really go the way [I wanted]," Hyne said.

"I certainly won't forget my debut ... to be able to put myself in the position to be selected I've worked hard since November, just like everyone else in the squad.

"To get the debut through a bit of injury I still see that I'm a valid member in the squad and the boys had full confidence in me.

"I'm signed for next year so it definitely has been worth it. I don't think I've made it just yet, but certainly a step closer.

"Hopefully there's more caps to come. I'll get into the gym, do all the rehab, get back out there as soon as I can."

Brumbies co-captain Christian Lealiifano "really felt" for Hyne who had "worked so hard" to make his debut.

It's something Lealiifano understands all too well, with the Brumbies playmaker having a similar experience with his Wallabies debut.

He was knocked out inside the opening minute against the British and Irish Lions three years ago.

The sight of Hyne on crutches in the change rooms struck a chord with Lealiifano.

"That was really disappointing to see his reaction after the game. To only get four minutes when he's worked so hard and really proved himself pretty much from pre-season," Lealiifano said.

"That's the kind of player he is, he just grinds it out and just constantly seeks improvement.

"We really felt for him. I looked on the screen and saw how he got injured, it was disappointing to see him go off after four minutes with his family down and everyone that's supported him and backed him the whole way.

"It's just the nature of footy as well, injuries come and go, but I really feel for him."

It wasn't just the Brumbies players who felt for Hyne but the Reds as well.

Queensland co-coach Nick Stiles coached him at Brisbane City last year and had texted Hyne in the lead-up to the game to congratulate him on his debut.

A stream of Reds players consoled Hyne outside the change rooms, wishing the popular figure the best for the future.

"I texted him the other day and again last night, he's a really good guy. You like to see players like Ben that came through," Stiles said.

"He's a builder by trade, did the hard yards and performed really well for us at Brisbane City.

"You like to see them get opportunities and unfortunately for him did his ankle in the first five minutes, but he'll bounce back."
