Gregson, 19, was already signed with the Cats until the end of 2017, but despite an indifferent campaign thus far, it's understood Geelong have seen enough in the teenager to re-sign him until the end of 2018.

Taken at pick 47 in the 2014 draft, the South Australian played 20 games last year, impressing with his pressure. He was rewarded with a rising star nomination in round six of 2015 following an 18-disposal, three-goal performance against Collingwood.

Things have not been as smooth for Gregson in 2016, with the Cats' increased depth applying selection pressure. While playing 10 games this year, his average disposals and goals have dropped slightly. He missed one game through soreness and one through illness, while also being demoted to the VFL twice.

Having been given the automatic two-year contract for a teenager draftee, Gregson had already earned an extra season on top of his initial deal, with the Cats announcing he had re-signed in March last year. Diminutive Cat Gregson was also a talented junior gymnast, winning several titles before quitting the sport to focus on his football.

While Geelong are primarily focused on their premiership assault, the Cats again have several veterans whose contracts expire at season's end.

Corey Enright, 34, Jimmy Bartel, 32, and Tom Lonergan, 32, have all remained reliable players in 2016, but whether they would all want to play on next season, and whether the Cats would be willing to retain the experienced trio next year remains unclear.

Injury-prone quartet Josh Cowan, Nathan Vardy, Daniel Menzel and Mitch Clark are also without deals for next year, but forward Lincoln McCarthy is believed to be on the verge of a new contract.

Inconsistent forward Shane Kersten is another Cat out of contract at season's end. The West Australian has been linked to a move to Fremantle, who have been yearning for a key forward, and are set to again contend for homesick Greater Western Sydney big man Cam McCarthy.
