The deposit was discovered by Cloncurry prospector John Walton, who spoke of his discovery during the Rockhana Gem and Mineral Festival recently.
A department spokesperson said that rare earth elements (REE) occurred in the belt of rocks in the Mary Kathleen region, and had been long aware of this.
“The formation in which the REE occur is extensive, and likely to include the area which Mr Walton made his discovery,” the spokesperson said.
“As part of a broader program to gather information about mines in the area, officers from the Geological Survey of Queensland intend to visit the site soon to try to understand the deposit.
“On-site testing is limited to examining the rock containing the ore and assessing how it relates to known REE deposits in the region.”
