The script could not have been better written for Jarryd Hayne to emulate NBA star LeBron James by returning to Parramatta and leading the club from the mire to long-desired premiership glory.

With star recruit Kieran Foran wanting out of his $4.8 million contract, doubts about the future of wing sensation Semi Radradra and the salary cap debacle that has all but destroyed Parramatta's season, they need a superstar and Hayne needs a new challenge.

After missing selection in the Fiji Sevens rugby team for the Olympic Games in Rio, the 28-year-old will return to Sydney later this week to consider his future and according to manager Wayne Beavis he is not short of options.

Since pulling the plug on his short but successful NFL stint with San Francisco 49ers, Hayne has been linked with the French, and Japanese rugby union competitions, the NSW Waratahs and a return to the NRL – for the Eels or a rival Sydney club.

"They [Parramatta] have flagged some interest. As other clubs have. As have rugby union," Beavis told Fairfax Media last Friday.

"I've been talking to other clubs this morning that are flagging interest, asking what's happening. They're very serious about him. He's going to sit down and talk about it when he comes home."

While it is understandable that Hayne would want to weigh up every option, the reality is there is only one decision that can secure his legacy as one of the greatest players of the modern era.

No doubt Hayne would be a star wherever he plays but for him to lead the Eels to a premiership after quitting the club at the end of the 2014 season to pursue his NFL dream would be comparable to James returning to Cleveland and helping the Cavaliers to their first NBA championship last month.

Despite all he achieved in 176 games for Parramatta, 20 Origins for NSW, 12 Tests for Australia and four World Cup appearances for Fiji in 2008, Hayne does not own an NRL premiership ring as the Eels haven't won a grand final since 1986.

"What more is there to achieve other than a premiership," Hayne said after announcing his departure from the Eels less than two years ago.

The closest Parramatta had gone was the 2009 season in which Hayne won a record seven consecutive man-of-the-match awards to almost single-handedly carry the Eels to the grand final against Melbourne, but there is a feeling the club is getting closer to that elusive premiership goal.

Despite all the off-field turmoil engulfing the Eels, which includes the loss of 12 competition points, $1 million fine and deregistration of five officials for salary cap breaches, Parramatta are enjoying their best season on the field since 2009 and remain a slim hope of making the finals.

Even more heartening for their prospects in future seasons is that many of the Eels 10 wins have been without Foran, who played just nine of the club's 16 matches so far before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury and last Friday seeking a release to deal with his well-documented personal problems.

In addition, former Test forward Anthony Watmough did not play a match this season before being forced into a retirement, while the club also had to release hooker Nathan Peats and centre Ryan Morgan to get under the salary cap and allowed prop Junior Paulo to make a mid-year move to Canberra after he received a police warning for consorting with criminals.

While Hayne has been strongly linked with Sydney Roosters, he told Fairfax Media in February he wanted to play for the Eels if he returned to the NRL but Parramatta's salary cap dramas, which mean they have $688,600 less to spend on players than other clubs next season because of illegal third-party deals, appeared to put an end to that possibility.

However, Foran's impending departure has now paved the way for Hayne to rejoin the Eels and it is an opportunity he should not turn down.
