That's 40 more personnel than 2015 and 150 more than 2012.
But United Firefighters Union state secretary John Oliver said while the increase was encouraging, it was only the start of what was needed.
"In the last budget that came through money was made available for 44 additional firefighters," he said.
"We think this is a significant improvement as a starting point.
"Firefighters have increased by 8 per cent in the last 10 years, police have had a 25 per cent increase and ambulance has had a 39 per cent increase.
"We have felt like the pour cousin until recently."
Mr Oliver said the role of firefighters had changed so much in the past 15 years but that wasn't reflected in the staffing levels within the organisation, with numbers barely changing in that time.
"Firefighters not only fight fires but we are responding to almost every emergency," Mr Oliver said.
"The numbers haven't kept up with our responsibilities in the community.
"What we do is fight fires, attend road accidents, hazmat situation, swift-water rescues along with chemical, radiological and biological hazard mitigation.
"We have taken on a range of skills in the last 15 years that really needs attention from the view of crewing for trucks."
The figures, tabled in Parliament by Emergency Services Minister Bill Byrne in response to a question on notice from Steve Minnikin, showed the breakdown of staff throughout different regions and showed that some areas, including Brisbane, far northern and northern regions, had decreased crewing numbers.
A spokeswoman for Queensland Fire and Emergency Services said the organisation was well-resourced.
"Queensland Fire and Emergency Services is well-resourced across the state and continues to provide the appropriate levels of operational response to ensure the safety of the community," she said.
"QFES applies a consistent formula for the placement of resources in communities, to meet operational requirements and demands throughout Queensland.
"When a location is identified as having sufficient growth to build a new fire and rescue station, additional staff are recruited to meet the needs of this station."
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services did not operate with geographical boundries, allowing crews from other stations to support their colleagues nearby when the need arose.
Staffing generally consisted of sufficient firefighters to crew a pumping appliance (four for each pumping appliance) or specials appliance (two for each special appliance). This was supported by operational positions to provide training, community safety and a range of other specialist positions.
"Fire and rescue stations do not have operational response boundaries and crews are available to respond to emergency incidents in any area as required," the spokeswoman said.
In the last financial year firefighters responded to about 64,000 incidents.
