Gallen will surpass Danny Buderus as NSW's longest-serving captain when he leads the Blues for the 16th and last time in the dead rubber after announcing before the start of the series that he would retire from Origin after this year.

The decision has allowed Gallen to bow out of Origin on his terms – something few players get to do as fellow veterans Greg Bird, Beau Scott, Luke Lewis, Ryan Hoffman and Anthony Watmough can attest after being dropped from the NSW team in the past two seasons.

Bird is still hopeful of being recalled next season while Farah insists he isn't approaching Wednesday night as his last Origin match but Daley has blooded eight players this year, including likely starting five-eighth Matt Moylan, and he said he would continue looking towards the future next season.

"Tomorrow night is about us signing off this year on a positive," Daley said. "I think that will really lead us into the next era, and we have got a lot of young guys who have been given an opportunity throughout the series, so it's exciting times for them and let's hope they show everyone tomorrow night what they are capable of.

"We have gradually started to have a lot of changes to the side since 2014. Last year we started to make some huge changes and at the end of this series there will be a couple more that may or may not go on."

Daley did not name those players who may be joining Gallen on the sidelines next season but Farah was not among the players he nominated as contenders for the Blues captaincy in 2017, which included Aaron Woods (25), Boyd Cordner (24), Josh Jackson (25) and Wade Graham (25).

"Next year you will see one of the younger guys take on that responsibility," Daley said. "Once Gal has moved on I think one of the younger guys will step up into this role.

"I have been very impressed with a number of them, and depending on how they perform and develop over the next 12 months it will definitely be one of them."

Of the four, only Woods is a current NRL captain after taking over the reins at Wests Tigers from Farah this season.

Meanwhile, Moylan is expected to start at five-eighth ahead of Cronulla utility Jack Bird, who played the position when Adam Reynolds was forced from the field in Origin II and had been widely tipped as the South Sydney halfback's replacement following his withdrawal with injury last week.

Daley said Moylan and Bird would share the role, with James Maloney to play halfback.

"Birdy will get an opportunity there," Daley said. "Having said that Moylan will spend some time there. Both those guys have trained in that position."

Despite having already lost the series, Daley said NSW had plenty to play for and were determined to send Gallen out a winner.

"I think he will leave a legacy of giving his best," Daley said of Gallen. "I don't think anyone can question that he goes out there and leaves nothing in the tank.

"He has been a true warrior and in some difficult times. He has aimed up every time he has worn the blue shirt, the boys appreciate that and they know how much this game means to him personally."
