Star Parramatta Eels five-eighth Corey Norman faces an uncertain playing future after being convicted of possessing a prohibited drug and possessing a prescribed restricted substance.

The 25-year-old appeared before the Sydney Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday morning, where he also received a $400 fine.

Norman was found in possession of MDMA capsules and muscle relaxants after the group of men he was with were stopped during a routine metal detector search at the Star casino on May 20.

At the time, police also issued Norman, former teammate Junior Paulo and ex-Penrith Panthers hooker James Segeyaro with consorting warnings after a picture was posted on Instagram of the trio dining with known criminals inside the casino.

Court documents reveal that Norman was dining with a number of men in a private dining room at The Century restaurant when CCTV captured a man giving him a white plastic container on May 20.

Norman put it in his pocket.

"The accused later hands the white container to another male who opens it, scatters the contents in his hands and then passes an item to a male to his left who then swallows something small," the fact sheet said.

Norman is not captured consuming any of the contents of the container.

When the group later go to The Star, Norman is subjected to a random body scan and security officers ask Norman to open the container he is carrying.

When security officers sight a number of white tablets and two blue and pink coloured capsules inside the container Norman tells them, "It's MDMA".

Barrister Murugan Thangaraj SC asked for no conviction to be recorded for his client, but Magistrate Michael Price refused.

Mr Thangaraj argued that this was his client's first court appearance and that he had suffered enough punishment.

He said Norman was a man who had helped his mother considerably by buying her a house, paying her bills and making all the mortgage repayments.

It was also pointed out that Norman had done a lot for a young boy who lived with difficulties.

"There is no doubt about his remorse," Mr Thangaraj said.

Norman declined to make a comment as he left court.

The court appearance comes after Norman and former roommate Segeyaro were embroiled in another controversy this week.

Revelations emerged that Norman was allegedly filmed partaking in a sex act as Segeyaro, who has recently moved to England to continue his career, watched on.

There is no suggestion the duo have done anything wrong.

Norman is off-contract at season's end and now faces an uncertain playing future. Negotiations with the NRL club were delayed because of these charges.

The player's anguish is expected to continue with the NRL's integrity unit likely to suspend him from games.
