In an exciting boost for women's football, Seven Melbourne managing director Lewis Martin said he can see the women's game making real progress on free-to- air television.

"For us, it was a really easy decision to broadcast the first women's AFL game as well as subsequent matches," Martin told Fairfax Media.

"We are talking with the AFL and the structures of next year's competitions are something we are working on. A regular slot is on the table."

AFL game and market development manager Simon Lethlean was also keen to see a deal struck.

When asked if women's AFL fans could expect to see the national competition on television next year, Lethlean was optimistic.

"I'm pretty confident we will be able to work something out," he said. "In the coming months we will have those discussions with Seven, Foxtel and Telstra to nut that out."

However there is still some uncertainty as to how the television rights will play out.

"We've been pretty keen to get the clubs licensed, sort out the marquee players, work on how the fixture will look and that will marry into the pre-season completion," Mr Lethlean said.

"We haven't actually gone to them [Seven Network] with a proper proposal about how it's going to look."

The first live broadcast of a women's AFL game on the Seven Network in 2015 was a huge success.

The women's match between Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs drew a larger free-to- air audience than Adelaide's 112-point win against Essendon a day earlier, with 31,000 more fans tuning in to watch the women's clash.

The development comes in light of the AFL's announcement earlier today that the final women's exhibition match for 2016, held at Whitten Oval, will be broadcast live nationally on the Seven Network.

The game will see the Bulldogs and Demons playing off for the Hampson-Hardeman Cup on Saturday, September 3.

Lethlean said the match will be a preview of the talent set to be on display next year, with the national women's competition beginning in 2017.

"The very best players in the country have been selected by the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne Football Club for a match that will be one of the highlights of the Celebration of Football weekend held between round 23 and the AFL finals series," he said.

The AFL is expecting a full crowd, a promising sign given the launch of the Women's AFL league competition next year and talk of regular broadcasting.

"We expect fans will turn out in force for the match," Lethlean said.
